Electrolysis Hair Removal

About Electrolysis Permanent Hair Removal

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal that approved by the FDA. Electrolysis uses a small electric current to destroy the hair follicle. A fine needle is inserted into the hair follicle and an electric current is applied to the base of the follicle, destroying the cells that produce hair. This process is repeated for each hair to be removed.

What does electrolysis feel like?

When treated by a trained professional using the latest equipment (me!), electrolysis is less painful than tweezing or waxing. You may experience a tingling or warm sensation during the procedure and after, some redness or swelling. The redness usually abates after 30 minutes. If you are concerned about discomfort, take a pain reliever 30 minutes before your appointment. Avoid electrolysis just before and during your period! If you are sensitive to pain, there are topical anesthetics you can use before your treatment. Ask Laura for more information on topicals.

What areas can you treat with electrolysis?

Anywhere except the hair in your nose and ear canal and any hair growing in mucous membranes.

I also cannot treat hairs in moles or warts without a doctor’s note. Please see a dermatologist for hair growth in moles, warts, or other raised skin spots.

How many treatments will I need?

It’s different for everyone which is why you will get a customized plan for you and your unwanted hair. Each area of the body has a unique density of hair follicles (highest density on the face, lowest density on the legs). In addition, each hair follicle must be treated multiple times to eliminate the hair. Regular visits and consistency are critical to see results. Unless you have a hormone imbalance or are preparing for GAS/GCS, expect to see results in 12 – 24 months.

May I have electrolysis if I have a medical condition?

Electrolysis is safe for most people. However, there are some medical conditions that are contraindicated. Before the treatment we will discuss your health and medical history in detail to ensure that electrolysis hair removal is right for you. If you are not sure, speak to Laura about your concerns.
